We've all seen dramatic bathroom makeovers in magazines and on popular television shows. However, that drama usually comes with a major price tag. This month, we are going to explore some ways to achieve a fast and inexpensive new look in even the most outdated bathroom.
Walls : First, choose your room's color scheme. Even if you have an avocado green tub, you'll be able to update the room by picking the right colors for the walls and accessories. Expect to pay between $300 and $600 to have your bathroom painted or wallpapered. If you can paint it yourself, you'll be able to make a huge difference in your room for under $100. Picking the right colors is the most important step in your makeover. Feel free to give me a call if you need help.
Toilet and Sink : You can spend a fortune on toilets and sinks, but you don't have to. You'll get more visual impact from your sink, so I suggest splurging a little on the sink and spending less on a new toilet. You can get a basic toilet for less than $200. For sinks, I recommend oversized, square pedestal sinks. They add instant style to a bathroom, make the room look larger and cost less than a full vanity. The drawback is that they do not offer storage. Most home improvement stores carry mid-range pedestal sinks for less than $400.
Faucet : Once you have a new sink, you'll definitely want a new faucet. If you have cabinets, make sure the cabinet and faucet hardware match. Today's most popular choices include polished nickel and oil-rubbed bronze. While you can spend hundreds of dollars on faucets, you can also get a nice look with less expensive options. Don't forget about your shower. Large rain showerheads give create a spa-like feeling. Many basic models cost less than $100.
Ceramic Flooring : Ceramic tile is easy to maintain and affordable. You'll save a lot of money if you can install it yourself (It isn’t difficult. You just need some basic skills and practice.) You can create a beautiful floor for anywhere between $1 and $3 a square foot for materials. Installation charges start at around $5 - $10 a square foot but can go much higher for custom work.
Decorative Details : Now, it's time to make your ordinary bathroom truly extraordinary. Consider installing crown molding and tall baseboards with rounded shoe molding. Moldings hide imperfections and give even small rooms a finished, upscale look. Replacing your lighting will also make a huge difference. Next, focus on accessories, such as a rug and window treatments. Consider installing floating shelves to display decorative items. If you have space, I highly recommend a piece of freestanding furniture, such as an étagère for extra storage.
By choosing a few of these projects, you'll be able to get a new look without spending more than $1,500. If you carefully choose your materials and can do most of the work yourself, you may be able to incorporate all of these ideas for that price. Remember, beautiful design doesn’t have to be expensive.
