A Marriage Of Style

Men and women often have very different ideas about what makes an ideal interior. Therefore, when designing a space for a couple, it’s best to strive for a gender neutral environment that reflects both partners’ personalities. For instance, we often see beautiful bedrooms with pastel or floral duvets and accessories. That’s fine, unless a man also inhabits the space. A good rule is to stick to solid, neutral colors on larger pieces. Add patterns and/or bold colors in the form of accessories.

If you have overly masculine or feminine pieces that you love, look for ways to achieve balance. A floral sofa will look less feminine if grouped with a pair of leather club chairs. Conversely, a masculine leather couch can be softened with accent pillows. Keep men in mind and forego flounces and ruffles. Straight or piped edges will look less fussy.

You can also achieve gender balance with artwork. A painting or print that seems overly feminine can be transformed with a sleek metal or simple wood frame.

You don’t have to give up certain colors or styles that seem too masculine or feminine in family areas. Use them in your private rooms and workshops. But when decorating with your spouse, remember to make everyone feel at home.
